Today let’s combine two of my favorite things: adding painted textures to digital art and saving time!
I’m saving time here because instead of creating new textures for every single illustration, I’ve built a texture library full of texture overlays and texture stamp brushes that I can use over and over again. Excuse me while I pat myself on the back for being so darn smart.
And guess what? You also get to save time because I did all the painting, waiting for paint to dry, scanning, and editing of these textures but you can just grab the texture and stamp brush set that I made from these textures. You’re working smart, saving time, and getting a bunch of gorgeous gouache texture for your illustrations.
I’ve created these tutorials in Photoshop, but these methods work in any raster-based apps that let you do things like make clipping masks and use blending modes. Feel free to use Procreate, Fresco or Affinity Photo to follow along with these tutorials too.
If you grab the Gouache Textures & Stamp Brushes Set, you’ll get texture overlays, which can be used with any app. And you’ll get the stamp brushes in two formats: .brushset which can only be used in Procreate and .abr which can be used in Photoshop, Fresco, or any other app that uses .abr files.
Alright, let’s add some texture, shall we?

The Brushes and Textures
I’m using this Gouache Textures & Stamp Brushes set that I made. It features painted textures and stamp texture brushes made from scans of real painted bits and pieces, so it really gives you work a lovely, painted spontaneity.
